McDonalds and Burger King Scrap Plastic Kids Meal Toys

Dec 27, 2019

The war on plastics is growing, with Burger King and McDonald announcing that it will no longer include plastic toys in kids’ meals served in the United Kingdom. Burger King and McDonald’s have both announced they are to remove plastic toys from their children’s meals entirely or allow customers to swap them out, in an effort to reduce waste. Burger King is also planning to install containers in UK stores so that old plastic toys can be recycled and used to build play areas. While McDonald’s will begin the option of the fruit bag next month followed by the book from early next year. According to the Metro UK, through this removal and swapping out of the toys, Burger King will save an estimated 320 tons of waste annually and McDonald's other than scrapping toys alongside its roll-out of paper straws, the removal of McFlurry plastic lids and of single-use plastic from salads, will reduce waste by 1,005 metric tons annually.
With companies facing increased pressure from governments and consumers to reduce pollution and plastic use, it’s a welcome gesture by big brands like Burger King and McDonald’s towards a sustainable future. Let us see if other corporate giants would follow the suit or not?
